When Do You Need to Change Your Number?

You need to update your SASSA phone number if:

  • You lost your SIM card
  • Your phone was stolen
  • You got a new number and let the old one expire
  • You did a SIM swap at your network provider
  • Someone else is using your old number

Your registered phone number is how SASSA sends you OTPs, payment notifications, and biometric verification links. Without access to it, you cannot check your status or make changes to your profile.

Why Biometric Verification Is Required

Changing your phone number is a high-security action. To prevent someone else from hijacking your grant, SASSA requires you to complete facial biometric verification before the change goes through. This proves that the real account holder is making the request.

This is a good thing. It protects you. Without biometric verification, anyone could change your number and steal your payments.

How to Change Your Phone Number

1

Visit the SRD portal

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer.

2

Request a phone number change

Look for the option to change your cellphone number. Enter your ID number and the new phone number you want to use.

3

Complete biometric verification

The system will ask you to take a selfie. It compares your face to your Department of Home Affairs photo. See our biometric tips to pass first time.

4

Wait for confirmation

If verification passes, your phone number will be updated. You should receive a confirmation SMS on your new number.

What if You Cannot Complete Biometric Verification?

If the online biometric check is not working for you (camera issues, failed matches, no smartphone), you have one other option:

  • Visit your nearest SASSA office in person
  • Bring your original ID document (not a copy)
  • Explain that you need to change your phone number
  • The SASSA staff will verify your identity and process the change
SASSA offices can be busy, especially at the beginning of the month. Go early in the morning on a Tuesday or Wednesday for shorter queues.

How Long Does the Change Take?

If you complete biometric verification online, the change is usually processed within 48 hours. After the change goes through:

  • All future OTPs will go to your new number
  • Payment notification SMSs will go to your new number
  • Any future biometric verification requests will go to your new number

If you changed your number at a SASSA office, it may take a few extra days (up to 5 business days) to reflect on the system.

After Changing Your Number

Once your new number is active on the SASSA system, do a status check to make sure everything is working. Visit the online check guide and use your new phone number when prompted.
