SRD R370 Grant (Social Relief of Distress)

R370/month

The SRD grant is for unemployed adults between 18 and 59 who earn less than R624 per month. It was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been extended multiple times. President Ramaphosa confirmed during SONA 2026 that it will continue, with R35.2 billion allocated.

Child Support Grant

R530/month

Paid to the primary caregiver (usually the mother) of a child under 18. The caregiver must earn below the income threshold set by SASSA. You can receive this grant for each qualifying child. This is the most widely received grant in South Africa, reaching over 13 million children.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with your ID, the child's birth certificate, and proof of income.

Older Persons Grant

R2,180/month (R2,200 for 75+)

For South African citizens or permanent residents aged 60 and older. There is a means test based on your income and assets. If you are 75 or older, you receive a slightly higher amount of R2,200 per month.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of income/assets.

Disability Grant

R2,180/month

For adults between 18 and 59 who have a disability that prevents them from working for six months or longer. You need a medical assessment from a SASSA-appointed doctor. The grant can be temporary (reviewed every 6-12 months) or permanent, depending on the nature of the disability.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office. You will need a medical report.

Foster Child Grant

R1,180/month

Paid to foster parents who have a valid court order placing a child in their care. The court order is the key requirement. Without it, you cannot receive this grant. It is paid per child in foster care.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with the court order and your ID.

Care Dependency Grant

R2,180/month

For parents or caregivers of children under 18 who have a severe mental or physical disability requiring permanent home care. A SASSA medical officer must confirm that the child needs full-time care at home.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with medical records and your ID.

War Veterans Grant

R2,200/month

For veterans who served in the Second World War or the Korean War. Due to the age of qualifying veterans, this grant has very few active recipients. It includes a means test.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with proof of military service.

Grant-in-Aid

R530/month

An additional grant for people who already receive the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant and who need full-time care from someone else. It is paid on top of the existing grant to help cover the cost of a caregiver.

Apply at your nearest SASSA office with a medical report confirming your care needs.
