Scammers target SASSA beneficiaries every single month, especially around payment dates. They send fake messages, create fake websites, and even call people pretending to be SASSA officials. Here is what to look out for.
Current Scams
⚠ Scam 1: Fake SMS Claiming Your Money Is Ready
THIS IS A SCAM. SASSA never sends links to "claim" your money. If you are approved, the payment goes directly to your bank account or CashSend. You never need to click a link to receive your money.
⚠ Scam 2: Fake WhatsApp Numbers
THIS IS A SCAM. The only real SASSA WhatsApp number is 082 046 8559, and it has a green verified tick. SASSA will never ask for your banking PIN, password, or OTP on WhatsApp.
⚠ Scam 3: Phishing Websites
THIS IS A SCAM. Real SASSA websites always end in .gov.za (like srd.sassa.gov.za). Any website with .com, .co.za, .net, or .org asking for your SASSA details is fake. They steal your information.
⚠ Scam 4: Phone Calls Asking for Your PIN
THIS IS A SCAM. SASSA agents never ask for your banking PIN, card number, or one-time passwords. A real SASSA call centre agent will only ask for your ID number, nothing else.
⚠ Scam 5: People Charging Money for SASSA Services
THIS IS A SCAM. All SASSA services are 100% free. Nobody can speed up your application. Nobody can guarantee your appeal will succeed. Anyone asking for money is a fraud.
How to Verify if Something Is Real
Quick Safety Checks
- Check the URL: Real SASSA links always end in .gov.za. Anything else is fake.
- Check for PIN requests: Real SASSA never asks for your bank PIN, card CVV, or passwords. Ever.
- Check for payment requests: Real SASSA never charges money for any service. Everything is free.
- Check the WhatsApp number: The only official number is 082 046 8559 with a green verified tick.
- Check if it makes sense: If someone says they can "speed up" your application or "guarantee" an appeal, it is a lie. SASSA does not work that way.
How to Report a Scam
- SASSA Fraud Hotline: 0800 60 10 11 (select the fraud reporting option)
- SAPS: Visit your nearest police station and open a case, especially if you lost money
- Your bank: If you shared banking details with a scammer, call your bank immediately to freeze your account
Remember These Three Rules
- SASSA links end in .gov.za. Everything else is fake.
- SASSA never asks for your PIN. Not by SMS, WhatsApp, email, or phone call.
- SASSA services are free. Nobody can charge you to "help" with your application.
