Moya is a data-free messaging and services platform built for South Africa. You can access government services, including SASSA, without using any mobile data at all. The app is free to download and free to use once it is on your phone.

How to Download Moya
If you do not have the Moya app yet, here is how to get it.
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone.
- Search for "Moya Messenger" in the search bar at the top.
- Tap Install. The download itself uses data, but once the app is installed, everything inside it works data-free.
- Open the app and register with your cellphone number. You will get a verification SMS to confirm.
How to Check Your SASSA Status
Once Moya is installed, follow these five steps to check your SRD grant status.
Open the Moya app on your phone
Tap the Moya icon on your home screen. The app will open without using any of your data.
Tap on "Discovery" or "Services"
Look at the bottom menu of the app. Tap on the tab that says "Discovery" or "Services" depending on your version of the app.
Find and tap "SASSA Services"
Scroll through the list of available services until you see SASSA. Tap on it to open the SASSA status checker.
Enter your ID number and cellphone number
Type in your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied for the SRD grant. Make sure both are correct before you continue.
View your result
Your status will appear on the screen. Take a screenshot so you have a record of the result. This is useful if you need to show it to someone later or if you want to compare it next month.
What Moya Can and Cannot Do
Moya gives you quick access to your status, but it does not do everything. Here is a breakdown.

- Submit an appeal against a declined month
- Update your banking details
- Change your phone number on your SASSA profile

Limitations to Keep in Mind
- Status updates can be slower. Moya sometimes runs 1 to 2 days behind the official SASSA portal. If you need the very latest result, check on the website instead.
- Moya being down does not mean SASSA is down. These are two separate systems. If Moya is not working, try the official website or WhatsApp.
- You still need a network connection. The app works without using your data, but your phone does need to be connected to a mobile network. If you are in an area with no signal at all, the app will not load.
